Leaks or other issues on the roof of your house can be a huge issue. If water leaks into the home through the roof, it can cause water damage, mold, and mildew that can be bad for the wood and unhealthy for the occupants. Hiring roofers to inspect and repair the roof is a good place to start, and if you do it as soon as you notice an issue, you may be able to stop the damage before it occurs.

Roof Leaks

Leaks in the roof of your home can be a huge problem. However, roof repair is often possible if you know how to inspect the roof and patch the damaged area. Hiring roofers that know what to look for and how to fix it is a good idea, and the initial inspection could uncover issues with the roof that you didn't know were there.

Looking at the leak inside the house is vital because sometimes, the water is coming in somewhere other than where you notice it. Patching the roof above the leave may not be effective, and often the roofers will need to look in the attic to see if the water is traveling along rafters or pipes and popping up somewhere in the house that is not near the leak.

The water can damage the wood and other materials along the way, then pool up where it is dripping. Once the roofers have completed and full inspection of the structure, they can tell you where the water is coming from and what repairs are necessary.

Making Repairs

Once the roofers have located the damage, they can begin tearing the old roof shingles over the spot off, exposing the problem area. If the wood under the shingles is wet, the roofers may recommend leaving the roof open for a couple of days to dry.

The area where the most water was sitting should be treated to stop mold and mildew from growing and needs to dry out before installing new shingles over the wood. If the weather is not cooperative, the roofers may use a heater and cover the area with some plastic to ensure it does not get wet all over again.

Once the roof is dry, the roofers can install a new section of a vapor barrier over the spot and then weave new shingles in to fill in the area with damage. The shingles around the repair need to be in good shape, or the repair may not stand up over time. If there are concerns about repairs working, the roofing contractors doing the work may suggest a roof replacement, but if that is the case, have a second roofing company come and inspect the roof just to be sure that is what is necessary.
